Shoot Magazine profiles Matthew Heineman

The Cartel Land director talks inspirations, challenges, and the different ways to tell a story.

In their latest Director’s Profile, Shoot Online spoke to Superprime’s Matthew Heineman. Their in-depth article charts everything from his inspirations as a documentarian, to his successful turn at Sundance, to his recent foray into the world of branded entertainment.

While Matthew has been making movies for most of his life, he emerged last year with his affecting and raw film Cartel Land. The documentary earned him a slew of accolades, including the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary, a Best Feature Documentary Oscar nomination, and the International Documentary Association’s Courage Under Fire Award.

Through his partnership with Superprime’s John Lesher, Rebecca Skinner and Michelle Ross, he’ll connect with agencies and brands to create innovative spots and new storytelling experiences. “What I love about filmmaking is how it shows me that there are different ways to tell a story, including commercials and short-form content,” he said. Adding, “Through Superprime, I hope to continue to challenge myself as a filmmaker and as an artist.”
