Paul Thomas Anderson directs new Radiohead video

“Daydreaming” is the latest collaboration between the acclaimed director and band.

Radiohead have debuted the music video for their new song “Daydreaming,” directed by Superprime’s Paul Thomas Anderson.

Taken from the band’s long-awaited ninth studio album, A Moon Shaped Pool, the newly-released ballad is accompanied by scenes of frontman Thom Yorke purposefully walking. Throughout the song’s electronic flourishes and gentle piano haze, the singer opens doors onto various locations, including parking lots, laundromats, and snow-capped mountains. IndieWire wrote, “What starts as a city-set jaunt eventually turns intimate, startling and more than a bit alienating, complete with a final twist that only leads to still more gorgeous imagery. It’s already a PTA all-timer.”

Anderson’s relationship with Radiohead is well-established, with the band’s guitarist, Jonny Greenwood, having worked alongside Anderson to compose scores for the likes of There Will Be Blood and The Master. This isn’t the Boogie Nights director’s first turn at music videos either. Last year, he helmed two cinematic clips for singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom, the narrator muse in his 2015 feature Inherent Vice.

Radiohead’s digital album is available now, with a physical release slated for June 17. The video for “Daydreaming” will be screening in select movie theaters in the United States, with Drafthouse in Austin, Music Box Theatre in Chicago, and the Cinefamily in Los Angeles all having confirmed they’ve received a 35mm canister from Anderson that reads, “We’ve made a film, here it is. We’d be happy if you played it!”
