David LaChapelle showcases the incredible talents of Ukrainian dancer Sergei Polunin in a powerful routine for Hozier’s Grammy-nominated single.
LaChapelle directs the heavily tattooed 25-year-old former British Royal Ballet dancer, and principal dancer with The Stanislavsky Music Theatre and the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Russia, performing choreography by Jade Hale-Christofi.
In 2014 Polunin started his collaboration with the famed American photographer and music video director. In “Take Me to Church,” the Pop Art provocateur brilliantly captures ballet’s bad boy as he sautés and pirouettes around a sun-drenched space.
Washington Post’s Sarah Kaufman was drawn into the video’s artistry, “He’s telling a story, and I’m hanging on every non-word. I feel lifted when he flies into the air; I feel a thrilling little almost-whirl when he whirls. I’m right there with him on his own journey of vulnerability and transformation.”
