TOGETHER is an immersive, emotional VR experience that fuses dance and technology. It debuts this week at SXSW.
The piece was created in collaboration with director Terrence Malick, Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, movement artists Jon Boogz and Lil Buck, editors Ting Poo, Haines Hall, Rehman Ali, and composer Simon Franglen, along with Superprime and Facebook’s creative studio, The Factory.
The team collaborated to craft an emotional narrative about breaking down barriers and bringing people closer—all brought to life through dance. VR challenged Malick and Prieto to rethink the traditional narrative structure and deliver a piece that used VR to tell a timeless story about human connection.
In the words of Jon Boogz and Lil Buck, “Dance isn’t just entertainment, it’s a tool to empower, educate and break down barriers. TOGETHER is inspired by our original piece, No Borders, and was created to help start conversations and bring people closer. We are excited about the opportunity to explore ideas of freedom and dance on both a thematic and technical level. It was a big learning experience working with Terrence and Facebook in the VR space. Being filmed in 360 made us more self-aware of our spacing to the camera and each other. It was like working in a completely different world.”
