Justin Kurzel signs to Superprime

We welcome a celebrated Australian filmmaker known for telling affecting and visceral stories.

We’re excited to welcome Justin Kurzel, the visionary director behind Michael Fassbender’s time-travelling action movie Assassin’s Creed, to the Superprime roster.

The Australian filmmaker and screenwriter has a body of work that is visually magnificent and occasionally dark, ranging from a Shakespeare adaptation to a gripping biographical thriller set in his home state of South Australia. For commercial work, his client list features a variety of different brands including Volkswagon, Tooheys and British Council.

Kurzel was nominated for Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or with his second feature, Macbeth, which won the Spotlight Award at the American Society of Cinematographers. His debut feature, Snowtown, was screened at Cannes’ Critics Week in 2011 and won the jury prize. It also earned an AACTA Award for Best Direction and the Golden Hugo award at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Assassin’s Creed, the director’s most recent feature, is an adaptation of the popular video game franchise. The film broke the mold for the genre and established a wildly successful action-adventure franchise.

The Guardian wrote, “It has been a dizzying ascent for Kurzel. Five years ago he turned heads and stomachs with his debut, Snowtown, the story of a real-life Australian serial killer that made Silence Of The Lambs look like The Sound Of Music. After that came a visceral Macbeth, led by Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, his two leads on Assassin’s Creed.”

Kurzel is a charming and thoughtful auteur whose work is character-driven and visceral. We are thrilled to add him to our director roster and look forward to sharing new spots soon. In addition to commercial work, Kurzel is currently working on two feature films, The Seige and Haven.
